A PORT Talbot community centre has scooped a prestigious award – for the sixth time. Baglan Community Centre was handed the “best performer” award in the civic, culture and community venues category at the APSE 2012 Awards Ceremony in Glasgow - despite competing against more than 90 community venues across the UK. And another local centre – Mozart Drive Community Centre in Sandfields - was runner-up in the “most improved performer” category. The awards are a tribute to the hard work put in by the community development team at Neath Port Talbot Council, who run the community centre services and have been shortlisted for finalist places in the awards for the past seven years. They also won awards in 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. APSE – the Association for Public Service Excellence - is a local government body working with more than 300 councils across Britain to promote excellence in the delivery of public services.
KIND-HEARTED students at St Joseph’s Catholic Comprehensive School have thrown a special Christmas party for more than 200 local pensioners. There wasn’t a spare seat in the school hall on the day of the party, at which the guests were treated to a buffet lunch and drinks. Sixth form students dressed in festive costumes helped to prepare and serve the food, and even did the washing up. Lunch was followed by entertainment including some festive songs, a game of bingo and Irish dancing. There was also a spot of choral carol singing, and prizes were awarded to the raffle winners, including a bumper hamper of Christmas food and treats. The party is organised by the sixth form students at the school who, every year, run a number of fund raising events to pay for the party. Under the watchful eye of head of year Arthur Gwynn, the students sent out invitations to pensioners across Port Talbot and Neath, and arranged transport to and from the school on the day. Mr Gwynn said: ‘The Christmas party provides the pensioners of the area with an opportunity to meet young people and see them in a different light. “I am always impressed with [...]

CHRISTMAS has always been a time associated with tales of the supernatural. There is no better time for author and paranormal investigator Robert King to publish a book entitled The Ghosts of Neath that gives an insight into the spooks which seem to haunt the ancient borough. This quirky paperback should delight fans of the mysterious and the occult. Robert King has written a highly readable selection of tales from all parts of Neath, from the Victorian ghosts of the Gwyn Hall to the haunting of the Lodge cinema, where one of the ghosts literally “walked” through an usherette. His book cunningly tells of sightings of “Jersey Lil”, a woman who haunts the space between the Tower Hotel and the road along Jersey Marine. The selection of stories tells of apparitions and all manner of strange sightings that have been found still inhabiting their surreal existence, in many cases hundreds of years after their death. Observed and seen by ordinary men and women who have told their tales of the netherworld, this book attempts, with persuasive results, to inform the reader of the parallel world of the spirit. The fairy folk of the Vale of Neath who led a human [...]

This weekend, TV presenter and face of National Trust’s ‘I Love Wales’ campaign Leni Hatcher will join fellow Wizard of Oz fans to follow the yellow brick trail and explore the world of tinplate at Aberdulais Tin Works and Waterfall near Neath. The ‘Dorothy and the Tin Man Fun Weekend’ will be held this Saturday and Sunday (13 and 14 August). Packed with activities based on the classic fantasy tale Wizard of Oz, there will also be plenty of echoes from the days of the former water-powered tin works run by the National Trust. Leni said: “I’m so excited about this event. Ever since I was a child, I’ve been a massive fan of the Wizard of Oz. And who better than Dorothy and the Tin Man to bring alive the history of the old works at Aberdulais, where real tin men used to work?! “Throughout the summer I’ve been travelling across Wales exploring the outdoors and visiting National Trust properties. To be honest, I’d never really imagined that there’d be so much to do at Trust properties. I hope that Dorothy and this fun-filled event will attract people to come and experience the wide range of activities that places [...]

Talented performers from across the county will be competing against each other for a cash prize and the honour of winning the coveted Neath Port Talbot’s Got Talent trophy this Saturday. After three fiercely fought heats last month, 12 acts emerged as the best of the bunch, and will now battle it out at the Seaside Social and Labour Club to take home the trophy and call themselves the county’s most talented performer. The finalists are BreakOut Band, Gwen Davies, Liam Dwyer, Mike Dyer, Jessica Eckerall, Estelle Eley, Curtis Howe, Jasmine Leigh, Glen Parkhouse, Daniel Price, Emma Watkins and Where Corals Lie. The competition is in aid of the Ty Hafan and Ty Olwen hospices, and will be compered by local fundraiser Captain Beany. The caped charity hero said he is ‘over the moon’ to be hosting the event in such a good cause. He said the competition so far had been fierce: “During the audition heats in July we had a wide variety of young and old competing. The youngest was 12 and the eldest was 86 years of age. Predominately, all the acts are singers and bands and we were slightly disappointed that there were no speciality acts [...]

Thousands of people flocked to Aberavon seafront on Saturday for the twelfth annual Aberavon Beach Festival. Soaring temperatures and unbroken sunshine attracted unprecedented numbers to the event – with organisers attributing some of the success to a ‘Passion effect’. This year the festival offered a variety of events, with music, food, children’s entertainment, a climbing wall, a multi-cultural tent, craft exhibitions, a rescue helicopter display and even a re-enactment of a battle from 1812. Festival organisers, NSA, said it was their best ever event in terms of turnout and weather. “Just look around and the crowds and you can see what a fantastic turnout we’ve had,â€* said NSA Chair Gary Roberts. “I don’t think I’ve seen so many people down here on a day out for years. It’s reminiscent of the 1960s – it’s what Aberavon Beach used to look like. Neath Port Talbot Council Leader Ali Thomas joined members of Burton’s family at the opening in Pontrhydyfen, where Burton was born. Invited guests and local groups also took part in the inaugural walk, which includes spectacular views of the Pontrhydyfen Aqueduct, where the actor was often photographed on visits home.
