Big Garden Birdwatch 2011 TV ad from The RSPB on Vimeo. At the end of January 2011, over 600,000 people spent an hour watching and recording the birds in their garden for the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch. Now, it's the moment you've all been waiting for - the results! Which birds did best and how did Edinburgh birds compare to the national average? The most common or 'top bird' in the UK and Edinburgh was the house sparrow with an average of 4 per garden. Glasgow City's top bird was.... the feral pigeon. Now aren't you glad you live in Edinburgh? The second most common bird in the UK and Edinburgh was the blackbird, with so many of them about you do get the occasion nutter-bird sining in the middle of the night. In Glasgow City, sparrows are at number 2. Starlings are number 3 for the UK and Glasgow City but strangely, in Edinburgh Starlings are down at number 6 with them appearing in just a quarter of gardens compared to the UK gardens. With sparrows and starlings in our top 5 most common birds you might think they're going well. Actually, they're both priority species for conservation. This graph shows you the average number of starlings and sparrows in UK gardens over the last 15 years, you can see the decline is quite startling. Starling, my darling, where did you go? Graph from the RSPB website Edinburgh City has two birds that don't feature in the UK top 20, it's the bullfinches and siskin. In contrast the UK has more wrens and song thrushes then we do in Edinburgh city, neither of these wee birds made our top 20. The results are below. Big Garden Birdwatch 2011: UK Results Species Average Rank % of gardens House_Sparrow 3.77 1 64.9 Blackbird 3.28 2 96.3 Starling 3.13 3 52.3 Blue_Tit 2.58 4 83.8 Chaffinch 2.19 5 56.5 Woodpigeon 1.91 6 67.6 Robin 1.49 7 87.9 Great_Tit 1.39 8 58.4 Collared_Dove 1.33 9 54.7 Goldfinch 1.29 10 30.5 Dunnock 1.14 11 57.1 Long_tailed_tit 0.97 12 27.1 Greenfinch 0.88 13 30.5 Magpie 0.85 14 44.3 Coal_Tit 0.60 15 33.0 Feral_pigeon 0.53 16 16.0 Jackdaw 0.53 17 16.6 Carrion_crow 0.48 18 21.6 Song_Thrush 0.37 19 29.4 Wren 0.29 20 25.5 Big Garden Birdwatch 2011: Edinburgh City Species Average Rank % of gardens House_Sparrow 3.543 1 56.62 Blackbird 2.583 2 88.94 Blue_Tit 2.385 3 79.62 Chaffinch 2.056 4 54.74 Woodpigeon 1.859 5 70.87 Starling 1.812 6 25.76 Feral_pigeon 1.285 7 31.10 Magpie 1.179 8 56.07 Robin 1.082 9 79.17 Dunnock 0.999 10 52.70 Goldfinch 0.872 11 20.60 Great_Tit 0.839 12 43.15 Coal_Tit 0.714 13 40.72 Greenfinch 0.711 14 23.41 Carrion_crow 0.597 15 26.95 Long_tailed_tit 0.459 16 11.91 Jackdaw 0.431 17 15.14 Bullfinch 0.376 18 17.15 Siskin 0.346 19 10.13 Collared_Dove 0.323 20 16.52 Big Garden Birdwatch 2011: Glasgow City Species Average Rank % of gardens Feral_pigeon 3.637 1 56.88 House_Sparrow 3.594 2 58.57 Starling 3.003 3 36.61 Blue_Tit 2.715 4 82.33 Woodpigeon 2.182 5 66.00 Blackbird 2.108 6 84.53 Chaffinch 2.078 7 52.41 Magpie 2.003 8 71.74 Goldfinch 1.293 9 23.67 Robin 1.263 10 82.83 Great_Tit 1.218 11 50.50 Dunnock 1.015 12 49.75 Greenfinch 0.885 13 26.67 Carrion_crow 0.832 14 28.89 Coal_Tit 0.792 15 38.67 Siskin 0.733 16 17.66 Long_tailed_tit 0.605 17 18.00 Waxwing 0.513 18 3.90 Collared_Dove 0.464 19 22.30 Jackdaw 0.447 20 15.37 If you missed the Big Garden Birdwatch you can listen to our birdwatch in Victoria park (lots of excited whispering in the bushes promised) Listen!
This is part 4 of a four part special celebrating the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch 2011. On Saturday 29th January, Fat balls hung in the thousands, nuts were placed on every ledge, seed trails led to gourmet treats, bird tables were laid with the finest of feasts, something was going on in the garden, people were prepairing for a giant science experiment to help monitor and protect our garden birds (along with a bit of friendly competition). It was the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch 2011. Over half a million people took part in the watch and I was one of them, in Victoria Park for Greener Leith with Sound Artist, Emma Quayle. Disover the highs and lows of birdwatching, which birds we spotted, our mystery bird and what really happened mid air at the end of the watch: Listen! Someone shouted "what are you doing in there?" yes, we looked suspicious in the bushes but it was worth it. Thanks to everyone who took part with us, for promoting the watch and sharing the bird love. I enjoyed the build up to the watch almost as much as the watch itself. I've never tweeted so much (that's on twitter) and I espcailly loved it when the Scottish Poetry Library and Lets Get Lyrical started sending bird realted song lyrics to me. As usual the Broughton Spurtle were well ahead, having poetically promoted these very blog posts the day before on twitter with: Twa burds sat oan a barra.
The photo above shows the crowd that assembled when we held a commuters breakfast event in June last year, when more than 60 people stopped to for free travel advice and a bite to eat while their bike got fixed. We also found that people enjoyed getting to meet some of the other commuters that they see on the cycle path. That was before the winter and the dark nights arrived, and we know that conditions for much of last December were so bad that lot's of people gave up walking and cycling around town - because some pavements and cycle paths were so icy. Now that the ice has largely gone - for the last 3 months of our We Love Leith project, we've arranged to hold 5 regular commuter breakfast events to tempt people back out onto their bikes. If you've been using your bike over December, this is a chance to give your bike some free TLC, as all the salt and grit on the roads can cause mischief with all the mechanical parts of your bike. If you've made a new years resolution to get more active, or if your workplace has decided to take part in the latest Better Way To Work Challenge then we hope that these events will give you a chance to get some expert advice and help you make through the winter and into spring when riding conditions are better. If you got a bike for Christmas, and you would like reassurance that you, or the shop, have assembled it safely, you can have it checked out by an expert for free, at any one of these events. You can also get some advice about the best routes you can use. It may seem unlikely that a shop would sell you a dodgy bike, and most small independent shops would never sell a dangerous bike. However, like last year, someone came to one of our commuters breakfast events with a bike that had been dangerously put together by someone. We fixed it on the spot and sent them on their way. If you have similar concerns about your own bike, we'd be delighted to get you sorted. The events will take place in two locations between 7am and 9am: In Victoria Park: January 24th February 27th March 27th Water of Leith Cycle Path at Great Junction St Bridge: 10th of February 10th of March The map below shows you exactly where and when: View Leith Commuters Breakfast in a larger map Hope to see you there!

Thanks to everyone who turned out on Saturday to help give a quick clean to Victoria Park, especially the little people who were all very enthusiatic! In just over an hour and half, we collected about 13 bags of rubbish from the park. This was the first time that we'd organised a clean-up in Victoria Park, and needless to say we had the obligatory discussions over whether Victoria Park was actually in Leith. We think it probably is. We've got two more clean-ups planned. Next Saturday, we're working with Leith Links Community Council to clean-up Leith Links. (More details here). And, on the 6th of November, we're working with Leith Central Community Council to clean-up Pilrig Park (More details here). Given that it's likely to have got a bit cooler by then, you'll be delighted to know that we've got the funding together to pay Out of the Blue to come to the parks on their marvelous trike to provide hot soup and filled rolls for everyone who takes part in the Leith Links and Pilrig Park clean-ups. Funding for these events has come from Leith Central Community Council, Leith Links Community Council and Vegware. We're most grateful to all of these organisations for their support.
